STRENGTHENING MUSICAL POTENTIAL AS A HUMANISM RECONSTRUCTION MODEL
The Covid-19 pandemic is slowing down human activity in various sectors around the world. In this condition, the thought arises that the old normal state cannot be maintained and a new normal state is needed. The old normal life is full of inequality and corruption. This is due to development based on externalities (costs and impacts arising from the production/consumption process and borne by third parties, for example, pollution). This kind of development model has characteristics: 1) profits for some parties cause losses for others; 2) not balanced with the carrying capacity of the environment and culture. The Covid-19 coping strategies clash with the need to continue the 'old normal' social and economic life that has not been completed. The pandemic, then, exposes the limitations of the system based on externalities. Handling universal covid-19 is difficult in a society that is divided, full of inequality, and socio-cultural prejudice.
In a divided society like now, one way to do it is by making innovations which is based on cultural-development: the development of traditional culture creativity, strengthening tradition-based environmental insight, revitalization of the ecosystem, enhancing the inclusive nature of development, strengthening of modern national insight, as well as strengthening social solidarity and cohesion. Regarding this culture-based development, art (in this case music) is seen as relevant as the medium of contact because music is full of creative potential and strengthening social solidarity and cohesion. Indeed, music as a branch of art cannot solve this big problem. However, music is believed to be able to help strengthen human resources to deal with new lifestyle problems. In this case, music can play a role through formal-nonformal-informal music education, to complement human cognition, emotions, and behavior: open discourse, divergent thinking, being humanist, not giving up easily, behaving politely, having respect, and caring for the environment.
Starting from this assumption, this kind of musical potential needs to be strengthened so that it can become a model for the reconstruction of humanism in the future. The development of the humanitarian configuration through a model which is built on musical potential is expected to be a form of innovation in the field of culture-based development. Moreover, it is also expected to be an alternative solution in society, including socio-cultural inequality as today.
